Patient classifications are used to group patients together that share a common feature. This feature can be related to anything from belong to certain group of patients assigned to a particular clinic or doctor to patients that have quit smoking within the last 5 years (or, for that matter, you could have a classification of patients who grew up watching Gilligan's Island if you thought it would be useful). These classifications can then be used in the generation of reports and iQ, for example, making this a potentially very useful part of the patient record. The classifications to which a patient may be assigned are specific to each cancer group and are maintained using the Patient Classification Dictionary — see Dictionaries. If you would like to have a specific classification added to those available to you, speak with your cancer group administrator.

Classifications are also applied to medical events — see Medical Event Classification.
