LabVantage is a laboratory information management system (LIMS) purchased by the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) and maintained by the Comprehensive Oncology Data & Engineering (CODE). It is used for tracking samples and related data.
LabVantage has been pre-configured to address all aspects of biorepository management so that HCI can collect, process, store, and distribute well annotated, high quality biospecimens. It delivers the features and functionality needed for sample and data access, research collaboration, data integrity, and regulatory compliance.
LabVantage at HCI comes pre-loaded with common datasets used for oncology, and it is fully integrated with CORE and HCI's OnCore clinical trial management system. All study and participant information is updated in LabVantage nightly from CORE, and all sample data is reported nightly in reverse.
LabVantage is department-centric. It applies security at the department level in order for departments to fully control sample data within their custody. It allows some protected health information (PHI) restrictions at role/study-levels.
Researchers can extract specimen tracking data from iQ into a variety of different formats, and lab can also run reports through the LabVantage Ad-hoc utility for non-specimen related data.
Key Capabilities
CONFIGURATION Supports configuring sample collection and processing data on-the-fly. Allows generating pre-defined templates and workflows to reduce data entry.
SAMPLE/INVENTORY TRACKING Barcode printing and scanning uniquely identify samples, kits/consumables can be tracked and stored with reminders when inventory is running low, and sample custody with shipment manifest provides proper handoff during transfer.
INTEGRATION Full integration with CORE ensures that studies and participants are updated nightly. LabVantage reports samples nightly to CORE for integration with critical study and research data. OnCore events are imported into LabVantage from CORE as needed. BarTender integration enables barcode printing.
REPORTING Supports reporting on sample data through iQ, and non-sample related data through LabVantage Adhoc.
SECURITY Keeps sample data secure and HIPAA compliant. As a department-centric application, LabVantage gives full control over data. It can scrub most PHI at the role/study level.

SAMPLE TRACKING — From sample collection and receipt to storage and/or ship, LabVantage offers a wide variety of sample tracking services.
CUSTOM PROCESSES — Enables quick data entry through configurable default data presets for collection, transformation, aliquoting, and pooling. Also supports importing data from spreadsheets via pre-defined templates.
BARCODE PRINTING — BarTender integration allows connecting lab printers to LabVantage and tracking pre-labeled specimens.
INVENTORY TRACKING — Supports tracking and storing kits and consumables. Can send reminders when inventory is low.
SHIPMENT TRACKING — Tracks sample custody along with other critical shipping information.
GOOD LABORATORY PRACTICES (GLP) — Offers built-in GLP for CAP accreditation.
Interfaces
LabVantage interfaces directly with CORE. Samples collected and processed in LabVantage are loaded into CORE nightly.
